Quilted wall hanging 38″ x 48″.  Made of hand-dyed cottons and linens; machine quilted by the artist.

I recently became interested in the Yosemite watercolors of Japanese-American artist, Chiura Obata. He did a series of these in the 1920’s and 30’s, then had them made into woodblock prints that somehow visually mimic the action of the original wet pigment on paper. Using his images to guide my palette and my forms, I ended up with much larger blocks of uncut fabric than I usually use. While none of Obata’s ochre and tan remain in this particular piece, I feel that the influence of his El Capitan somewhere under the wall of water and vegetation I’ve created.
