<image:caption>Quilted wall hanging 38″ x 48″. Made of hand-dyed cottons and linens; machine quilted by the artist. I recently became interested in the Yosemite watercolors of Japanese-American artist, Chiura Obata. He did a series of these in the 1920’s and 30’s, then had them made into woodblock prints that somehow visually mimic the action of the original wet pigment on paper. Using his images to guide my palette and my forms, I ended up with much larger blocks of uncut fabric than I usually use. While none of Obata’s ochre and tan remain in this particular piece, I feel that the influence of his El Capitan somewhere under the wall of water and vegetation I’ve created. Price: $700</image:caption>

Price: $700</image:caption>

<image:caption>Quilted wall hanging, 19″ x 39″. Made of Japanese yukata cloth, commercial cottons, hand dyed cottons, and indigos from China; machine quilted by the artist. The idea for this piece came from a trip to the La Conner Quilt and Textile Museum in Washington state where I saw an exhibit of Japanese quilts curated by Miwako Kimura. The quilting in the piece was initially meant to set off the beautiful flower shapes in the yukata; it was only after I was finished that I realized it resembles the rake marks left in a Japanese rock garden.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Quilted wall hanging 42″ x 45″. Made of hand-dyed and commercial cottons; machine quilted at New Pieces by Kathy Ritter. I was challenged by the technical difficulty of retaining the background tie-dye’s subtle radiating pattern. I had to construct the quilt carefully to ensure that I could maintain the radial color streaks despite sometimes having to cut and seam the fabric into relatively small pieces. This radiation is strongly reinforced by Kathy Ritter’s excellent long-arm quilting.</image:caption>

This quilt was inspired by a batch of hand-dyes in my fabric collection, clamoring for attention. I had fabrics from an indigo-dyeing workshop given by John Marshall, a lot of cottons and linens I’d manipulated with fiber reactive dyes, and a few other oddments. These, combined with a snorkeling vacation in Hawaii, resulted in Beneath the Waves. Price: Sold</image:caption>

<image:caption>Quilted wall hanging 38″ x 48″. Made of hand-dyed cottons and linens; machine quilted by me. Price: $700</image:caption>

<image:caption>Quilted wall hanging 28″ x 45″. Made of hand-dyed and commercial cottons; machine quilted at New Pieces. This quilt was designed in modular rectangles, some of which contain curvilinear shapes that seem, in certain places, to connect the rectangles together. Some of these shapes intersect neatly, some appear disconnected. The finished piece reminds me of how we are sometimes not as we appear, in our attempt to connect. Sold</image:caption>
